Cutting Francis (1550-1595)

     Francis Cutting était un luthiste et compositeur anglais de la Renaissance . Il est surtout connu pour "Packington's Pound" et une variante de Greensleeves appelée "Divisions on Greensleeves", deux pièces initialement destinées au luth.
Cutting travaillait comme musicien pour la famille Howard , qui comprenait Philip Howard, comte de Arundel . On sait peu de choses de la jeunesse du compositeur, mais il eut dix enfants avec sa femme Elizabeth, dont huit figurent dans les registres paroissiaux de St. Clement Danes , à Westminster, paroisse dans laquelle Arundel House , la résidence londonienne des Howards.  Leur fils, Thomas Cutting, devint lui-même un luthiste distingué.
Cutting fait partie des premiers compositeurs anglais de luth dont les noms sont connus.  Plusieurs de ses quarante œuvres survivantes figurent dans A New Booke of Tabliture (1596) de William Barley ; Parmi ses compositions figurent "Galliard de Sir Walter Raleigh", "Pavan de Sir Fulke Greville" et "Pavan et Galliard de Mme Anne Markham. Sa musique survivante est de haute qualité, comprenant environ 51 morceaux de luth, deux solo de bandora et une partie d'accompagnement pour bandora: une production dépassée seulement par Dowland , Bacheler et Holborne .

      Francis Cutting was an English lutenist and composer of the Renaissance. He is best known for "Packington's Pound" and a variant of Greensleeves called "Divisions on Greensleeves", two pieces originally intended for the lute.
Cutting worked as a musician for the Howard family, which included Philip Howard, Earl of Arundel. Little is known of the composer's youth, but he had ten children with his wife Elizabeth, eight of whom appear in the parish registers of St. Clement Danes, in Westminster, a parish in which Arundel House, London's home of Howards. Their son, Thomas Cutting, himself became a distinguished lutenist.
Cutting is one of the first English lute composers whose names are known. Several of his forty surviving works are in William Barley's A New Book of Books (1596); His compositions include Sir Walter Raleigh's Galliard, Sir Fulke Greville's Pavan, Anne Markham's Pavan and Galliard, and her surviving music is of high quality, including about 51 pieces of lute, two bandora solos and one accompanying party for bandora: a production exceeded only by Dowland, Bacheler and Holborne.
